Direct traffic

Also called (direct) / (none), direct / none.

Visits that arrived with no referrer, no campaign tags and no click id, so the tool cannot tell where they came from.

Direct is a leftover bucket, not a channel. A visit lands there when the analytics tool found nothing to say where it came from: no referrer header, no UTM tags and no ad click id. In GA4 it shows as source (direct) and medium (none) (Google).

Some direct visits really are people typing your address or using a bookmark. Many are not: links opened from email apps, chat apps, PDFs and some in-app browsers often arrive with no referrer, and redirects can strip tags.

Tag every link you control, and use short links for print and bios, to move visits out of direct. The direct traffic guide covers every cause.
