How to track a beehiiv newsletter site: subscribers by source
Add analytics to a beehiiv website through its Google Tag Manager field, count subscriptions from the confirmation page, and see which links bring readers.
On this page
beehiiv has no box for custom scripts on every page, but its website builder takes a Google Tag Manager container ID, and anything you publish in that container runs on your beehiiv site (beehiiv). That is the way to add any analytics tool beehiiv does not list, Sporetag included. beehiiv also takes Meta, X, TikTok and GA4 IDs directly.
This page covers both routes, counting new subscribers, and tagging the links that bring them.
What beehiiv accepts
Under the website builder's Site settings, Tracking pixels, beehiiv takes these IDs on all plans (beehiiv):
| Field | Format | What it gives you |
|---|---|---|
| Google Analytics 4 | G- Measurement ID | Page views in GA4 |
| Google Tag Manager | GTM- Container ID | Any tag you publish in the container |
| Meta | Numeric pixel ID | Page views for Meta ads |
| X | Pixel ID | Page views for X ads |
| TikTok | Pixel code | Page views for TikTok ads |
| Google Search Console | Verification value | Search Console ownership |
The pixels apply to your beehiiv website, not to the emails. beehiiv says they track page views by default; a subscription needs a conversion set up on the confirmation page, in the ad platform or in Tag Manager.
If you turn on beehiiv's cookie banner, the pixels and the Tag Manager container wait until the visitor clicks Accept.
Install Sporetag on beehiiv
- In Sporetag, add your beehiiv site's domain and copy the tag from Set up your site.
- In Google Tag Manager, create a container for the site if you have none, and copy its
GTM-ID. - In beehiiv, open Website, Builder, the settings icon, Site settings, then Tracking pixels, and paste the container ID. It saves on its own.
- In Tag Manager, add a Custom HTML tag with the Sporetag tag, triggered on Initialization - All Pages, then Submit and Publish. The Tag Manager install guide has the details.
- If the beehiiv site has never been published, publish it once, since pixel settings stay in draft until then.
- Open your site in a new tab and check for your visit in Sporetag.
If beehiiv's cookie banner is on, Sporetag loads only after a visitor accepts, like every tag in the container.
Count new subscribers
The signup happens in a form, then often a confirmation step if double opt-in is on. Count the page people land on after subscribing as the goal, in any tool: the confirmation or welcome page address. beehiiv points out that double opt-in adds a page load before the subscription is complete (beehiiv), so count the page after confirmation, not after the form.
Tag the links that bring readers
beehiiv grows through links elsewhere: social bios, podcast notes, recommendations from other newsletters. Tag each with UTM parameters, and use a short link where tags would be trimmed or nobody can click, such as a podcast. Your newsletter's own links back to your site should carry utm_medium=email; see how to track email clicks.
Common questions
Can I add custom code to beehiiv?
For a single page, beehiiv supports HTML blocks. For code on every page, add a Google Tag Manager container ID in the Tracking pixels settings and publish the code as a tag in that container.
Does beehiiv support Google Analytics 4?
Yes. Paste your G- Measurement ID in the website builder's Tracking pixels settings. It tracks page views on your beehiiv website.
How do I track beehiiv signups as conversions?
Count a visit to the page subscribers reach after signing up, or after confirming when double opt-in is on, as the conversion in your analytics or ad platform.
Do beehiiv pixels track email opens?
No. The pixels run on the beehiiv website only, not inside the newsletter emails.
