Bot traffic
Also called bots, non-human traffic.
Visits made by automated software rather than people: crawlers, scrapers, monitors and fake clicks.
Search engine crawlers, uptime monitors, price scrapers, AI crawlers and click fraud all load web pages. Some identify themselves in their user agent; others pretend to be a normal browser.
Analytics tools filter bots differently. Common methods: known bot user agents, verified bot lists from a CDN, requests from data center networks, and scripts that only send data after the page has been visible for a moment. A tool that filters less shows more visits, a higher bounce rate and a lower conversion rate.
Signs of bots in a report: a spike of one-page visits from one country or city, very short visits, odd screen sizes, or traffic at a steady rate through the night. In Sporetag, events from known bots and automated browsers are dropped before they are counted.
