How to track a Squarespace site beyond the built-in analytics
What Squarespace Analytics shows, what it cannot tell you about ads and links, and how to add a tracking tag with Code Injection where allowed.
On this page
Squarespace has a capable built-in Analytics panel: traffic, sources, popular content, and for stores, sales and a purchase funnel. For a small site it may be enough. Where it stops is the question most owners eventually ask: which ad, post, email or flyer brought the people who booked or bought?
That answer needs every link you control to carry its source, and a tool that keeps the source with the lead or the sale.
Install Sporetag on Squarespace
- In Sporetag, add your site's address and copy the tag from Set up your site.
- In Squarespace, open the Code Injection panel. On most sites it is under Pages, then Website Tools.
- Paste the tag into the Header box.
- Click Save.
- Click Check my site in Sporetag, then open your site in a new tab.
Code Injection needs the Core, Plus or Advanced plan. The Squarespace install guide has the details.
Give every link a source
Squarespace sites often get most of their traffic from Instagram, email newsletters and print. Without tags, a large share of it lands in "direct". For each place you share your site:
- Tag the link with UTM parameters, with one naming scheme.
- For bios, print and anything spoken aloud, use a short link, which counts the click before the visit and keeps the tags out of sight.
- For Squarespace Email Campaigns, check that links carry UTM tags before sending.
Count bookings, forms and sales
- Forms: Squarespace form blocks send without leaving the page. Sporetag's form capture (90-day tracking) counts sends from forms with an email or phone field; press Test it to confirm it sees yours.
- Bookings: Acuity and other schedulers embedded as iframes run on another domain, so no script on your page can see the booking itself. Count the visit to the booking page as a goal, or send confirmed bookings with the Events API on paid plans.
- Store sales: Squarespace Commerce checkout pages are not plain pages on your site. If payments go through a Stripe account you own, the Stripe connector reads them on paid plans; otherwise use the Events API.
Common questions
Is Squarespace Analytics enough?
For traffic and top pages, often yes. For knowing which campaigns bring leads and sales, and for sending conversions to ad platforms, you need tagged links and a tool that ties the source to the result.
Why can't I find Code Injection?
It is only on plans that allow custom code (Core, Plus or Advanced), and Squarespace has moved the menu over time. Squarespace's help center has the current path.
Does adding a tracking tag slow down Squarespace?
A small deferred script has little effect. Several large tags and pixels together can. Remove ones you no longer use.
