Automatic events

Outbound link clicks, file downloads, 404 pages, scroll depth and form submits, counted with no code and free of your monthly allowance.

Some things are worth counting on every site. Sporetag counts these five for you, with no code:

EventCountsShows
Outbound linkClicks on links to other sites, like your booking page or a mapEach link, by host and path
File downloadClicks on PDFs, menus, price lists, zips, documents, audio and video files, and any link with a download attributeEach file
Page not foundVisits to your 404 pageEach missing page, and where people came from
Scroll depthHow far down each page people read: 25, 50, 75 and 100%The share of views of each page that reached each mark
Form submitEvery form sent on your site, except search boxesEach form, by its name or id

All five are on for every site. Turn any of them off in the site's Settings, under Automatic events. The reports are on the site's Events tab.

What they never read

  • No form field. A form submit names the form, never what was typed.
  • No query string or # part of an address. A link to calendly.com/acme?email=ann@example.com counts as calendly.com/acme.
  • No cookie and no storage. Automatic events work the same in Private mode and Attribution mode.

Free of your allowance

Automatic events never count toward your plan's monthly events. Turning them on costs nothing.

Make one a goal

On the Events tab, Make it a goal turns outbound link clicks, file downloads or form submits into a goal in one tap. It counts past events too. Scroll depth and 404 pages are reports, not goals.

404 pages

Sporetag looks for "404" or "not found" in the page title. If your 404 page says something else, type its words under More options in the Automatic events card. Or add data-sporetag-404 to any tag on that page:

HTML
<main data-sporetag-404>

Scroll depth, exactly

Each page view reaches a mark once. A visitor who reads half a page, switches tabs, then comes back and reads to the end counts once at 50% and once at 100%, never twice at 50%. A page shorter than the screen counts as read to the end.

How it loads

The tracking script loads a small add-on, x.js, with your site's switches already set. It is under 1.5 KB. With every switch off, the file is empty. Behind a script proxy, pass /st/x.js on like the script itself.

Automatic events are kept out of customer profiles and their timelines when they are not something the person chose to do: scroll depth and 404 pages.
