Call tracking
Tracking numbers that show which ad, search or flyer made the phone ring. Calls count as goals, join the caller's profile and can go to your ad accounts.
Many customers call instead of filling in a form. Call tracking gives you phone numbers that ring your real phone and tell Sporetag where each caller came from. It is on Solo, Studio and Agency, and "(when shipped)" until Sporetag switches calls on.
Open your site's Calls tab to set it up. It takes two steps.
1. Where calls ring
Enter the number your phones ring on today. Every tracking number forwards here. Callers hear ringing as usual, and your phone shows their own number, so you can call them back.
Then list the numbers your website shows, up to three. Leave it blank if your website shows the same number.
2. Pick your numbers
| Kind | What it is for | How it counts calls |
|---|---|---|
| Numbers for your website | Your site shows each visitor their own number, in place of yours | A call is tied to that visit: its source, campaign, ad and click ids |
| A number for one place | A flyer, a truck, Google Business Profile, an ad's call button | Every call to it counts for that place, by the name you give it |
Pick local numbers with an area code, or toll-free numbers. You see Twilio's fee for each number, and the cost of a call, before you buy anything.
Fees
Numbers come from Twilio, our phone partner, in your own Twilio account. It is the same account as your texting number, if you have one. Calls need no carrier registration, so a number works as soon as you get it.
| Twilio fee | Amount |
|---|---|
| Local number | $1.15 a month |
| Toll-free number | $2.15 a month |
| Taking a call | $0.0085 a minute (local), $0.022 a minute (toll-free) |
| Ringing your phone | $0.014 a minute |
| Recording, if on | $0.0025 a minute |
These are Twilio's list prices as checked on October 23, 2026. Sporetag records each fee on your account. Nothing is charged yet.
How numbers on your website work
Sporetag's tag already loads the swap once you have website numbers. There is nothing to add to your site.
- The swap looks for your listed numbers in
tel:links and in the words on the page. It keeps the way you wrote the number, like (503) 555-0142 or 503.555.0142. - It only asks for a number on pages that show yours, so the pool is not used up by pages with no number.
- If no number comes back, your own number stays. A call to it still reaches you; it just has no source.
- Each visitor keeps their number for 30 minutes after their last page or tap.
How many numbers you need depends on how many visitors look at your site at the same moment. Four suits most small businesses, and a pool holds up to ten. When every number is in use, the one idle longest goes to the new visitor, and a call on it counts for the newest visit. The Calls tab tells you when this happened this week and how many numbers to add.
A number split across tags, like <b>503</b> 555 0142, or drawn in an image, is not swapped. Write it as plain text or a tel: link.
What a call becomes
- Phone call: every answered call. It is a goal, so it shows on your dashboard, in reports, in the attribution report and in Autopilot.
- Phone lead: an answered call of 60 seconds or more. Change the length in the Calls tab settings.
- Missed calls are listed in the call log but are not goals.
Both goals are added for you when you get your first number, if your plan has room for them.
With 90-day tracking on, the caller's number finds or makes their profile, and the call joins it, with its length, where it came from and whether they called before. The same stream shows in Messages. The number is kept encrypted, and only while Show contact details is on. Automations can start on the Phone call or Phone lead goal.
To send phone leads to Google Ads, Meta and your other ad accounts, tick Phone lead under What to send on the Integrations tab. See Send results to your ad accounts.
The call log
The Calls tab shows calls by source and the latest 50 calls: when, where from, the caller's area code and last two digits, first call or not, and how long it lasted or that it was missed. The dashboard has a Phone calls widget, and client reports a Phone calls block.
Whisper
When you answer, you hear "Call from Google Ads." before the caller is put through. The caller does not hear it. Turn it off in the settings.
Recording
Recording is off unless you turn it on. When it is on:
- every caller hears "This call may be recorded." before they are put through;
- whoever answers hears "This call is recorded." in the whisper;
- the recording plays in the call log for you, never on shared dashboards or reports, and you can delete it.
Some states, like California, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania and Washington, need everyone on a call to know it is recorded. The two notices tell both sides. You are still responsible for following the rules where you and your callers are. This is not legal advice.
Privacy
- The swap sets no cookies and uses no storage.
- A visitor whose browser sends Global Privacy Control keeps no ad click ids with their number, and their calls are never sent to ad platforms. Your own stats still count them.
- The call log never shows a full caller number.
