Claim a site that is in another account

Your website is on someone else's Sporetag account, like a former agency's. Prove it is yours with a one-time code on your tag or in DNS.

On this page

A website can be live in one Sporetag account at a time. If you add a site that is already in another account, Sporetag does not stop you there. It opens Prove the site is yours instead, with a one-time code for you.

This happens most often when an agency or a freelancer set up tracking for you, or when you used Sporetag before with another email.

Prove it is yours

The page gives you a code that starts with st-. It is yours alone and stays the same until it is used. Put it on your site in one of two ways:

  • On your tag. Add data-claim="st-..." to the Sporetag script tag on your home page. The page shows the whole tag with your code in it, ready to copy, if the site has no tag yet. Paste it into the <head>.
  • As a TXT record. Where you manage your domain's DNS, add a TXT record named _sporetag.yourdomain.com with the value sporetag-claim=st-....

Then press Check for my code. Sporetag loads your home page once and reads your TXT records. Only a real script tag counts, not the code typed as page text. If the code is not there yet, the page says what it saw. DNS changes can take a few minutes, so wait and press it again. You can check up to 30 times an hour.

The code changes nothing for your visitors. Remove it once the site is yours, or leave it.

What happens next

The site is yours alone. It moves to your account with all its stats and history. The other account's logins on it are removed, never handed to you: store and ad account connections, Meta settings, conversions to ad platforms, Events API keys, booking hooks, the Wix install and client access. Connect your own when you are ready. The site counts toward your plan's sites; if your plan is full, Sporetag says so. Archive a site or upgrade, then check again.

An agency runs it for you. When the account that has it has labeled it with a client name, or has given anyone client access to it, the site stays with that account. Your proof still counts:

  • If their plan has client dashboards (Studio, Agency and Custom), you get the site's dashboard at once, read only. Open it from the link on the page.
  • If it does not, Sporetag asks them to invite you. If they do, the invite comes by email.

Either way, the account that has the site gets an email that names your email address and says what happened. It does not change their other sites, links or billing.

If someone claims your site

You get an email when someone proves they control a site in your account. If the site moved and that is wrong, reply to the email and we will look at it with you. If you run the site for a client, it stays with you, and you choose who sees it on the site's Share tab.
